The Christ the King Novena honors Jesus Christ as Lord of every person, society, and age. Catholics pray it so that His reign of truth, justice, mercy, and peace can take root in their hearts and shape the world around them.

Pope Pius XI established the feast of Christ the King in 1925 through the encyclical Quas primas. He taught that lasting peace cannot be built by excluding Christ and His law of charity from personal or public life. After the reform of the Roman calendar, the solemnity was placed on the final Sunday of the liturgical year and received the fuller title Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Its place in the calendar points toward the fulfillment of history in Christ.
The kingship of Jesus differs from domination based on force. The Gospels reveal a King who serves, forgives, bears witness to the truth, identifies Himself with the least, and reigns from the Cross. His kingdom begins as grace within the believer and demands concrete obedience, mercy, and justice. This novena asks that Christ rule every choice and heal the habits, relationships, and social structures that resist His love.
