More about Immaculate Conception

The Immaculate Conception concerns Mary’s own conception in the womb of her mother, not the virginal conception of Jesus. It teaches that Mary was redeemed by Christ in a unique and preventive way. The grace came entirely from God and prepared her for her vocation as Mother of the Savior. This doctrine developed through the Church’s prayer and theological reflection and was solemnly defined by Pope Pius IX in 1854.

The solemnity is celebrated on December 8, nine months before the Nativity of Mary. Mary’s privilege does not place her outside the need for Christ; it shows the power of His redemption applied to her from the beginning. Her freedom from sin bore fruit in a free and faithful consent to God’s plan. This novena asks that the same grace of Christ heal the faithful, strengthen their Baptism, and form a sincere desire for holiness.
